Therapist-priest blasted as abuser: Ex-altar boys claim Kane was molester by
Robin Washington and Maggie Mulvihill - 1/30/02 "Rev. Thomas Kane....Ph.D
and respected psychotherapist, scholar with postgraduate studies worldwide,
and founder of a chain of counseling centers for troubled clergymen
stretching from California to Boston to England. But in little more than a
decade, that world would crumble with the shutdown of his centers and
accusations that the brilliant priest entrusted to treat sexual deviants
among his fellow Catholic clergyman was himself guilty of child molestation.

....A few of the politicians who received these ill-gotten gains are rushing
to return them to funds for the employees. President Bush should follow suit
and return every penny of the $550,000 he received from Enron.

America's top politicians have long known Enron as one of the most generous
political donors the country has ever seen. The company doled out millions in
its relentless push to have state and federal governments deregulate the
energy industry. As governor of Enron's home state, Texas, and then later as
a candidate for the White House, President George W. Bush was at the front of
the line, both in terms of receiving political donations and dispensing
political favors.
According to the New York Times, Enron and a number of its executives
contributed more money to Bush over his political career than anybody else --
over $550,000! The company even kicked in $100,000 for Bush's inaugural
committee, a donation matched by Enron CEO Kenneth Lay, who could certainly
afford it: Lay reportedly sold $101 million worth of Enron stock even as he
urged employees to keep investing in the doomed company. Less than a year
later, Enron's bankruptcy and the final disintegration of its stock price
wiped out the company retirement savings of hundreds, if not thousands, of
Enron employees. Cathie and Wayne Stevens, for example, saw their nest egg,
built over 28 years of combined employment, go from $720,000 to $2,300
practically overnight.

The many government investigations and civil suits already in motion will
likely determine Lay's role in the sordid Enron saga. But in the meantime,
the man who reportedly sold $101 million worth of Enron stock at prices
hugely inflated by accounting lies (and aggressively urged the company's
employees to keep buying it!) can begin to make amends for the corporate
giant's shameless behavior.

CIA AGENT ALLEGEDLY MET BIN LADEN IN JULY
>From 'Le Figaro' [1 November 2001] Translated by Tiphaine Dickson
By Alexandra Richard (Page 2, October 31st, 2001)
While he was hospitalised, bin Laden received visits from many members
of his family as well as prominent Saudis and Emiratis. During the
hospital stay, the local CIA agent, known to many in Dubai, was seen
taking the main elevator of the hospital to go to bin Laden's hospital
room.

A few days later, the CIA man bragged to a few friends about having
visited bin Laden. Authorised sources say that on July 15th, the day
after bin Laden returned to Quetta, the CIA agent was called back to
headquarters.

Enron Understated its Lobbying Expenditures, CRP Analysis Finds
Embattled energy company Enron underreported its lobbying expenditures by
more than 50 percent in the first half of 2001, an analysis by the
non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics
has found. The company reported spending $825,000 on lobbying in the first
six months of 2001, according to its mid-year report. However, 13 outside
lobbying firms reported income from Enron
totaling at least $1,785,000 over the same period, a discrepancy of $960,000.
The discrepancy appears only on the report filed by Enron Corp., not on
reports filed by Enron's subsidiaries. When those subsidiaries are included,
Enron's lobbying totals - as reported by outside lobbying firms - exceeded
$2.0 million for the first half of 2001. In comparison, Enron and its
subsidiaries spent $2.1 million on lobbying in all of 2000 and $1.9 million
in 1999. In a letter sent Monday to Secretary of the Senate Jeri Thomson and
Clerk of the House Jeff Trandahl, the Center complained of Enron's apparent
violation of lobbyist reporting requirements under the Lobbying Disclosure
Act..... It is unclear whether the $825,000 reported by Enron Corp. reflects
in-house lobbying efforts, payments to outside lobbying firms, or both.

Upon noticing the discrepancy, the Center contacted the Enron lobbyist who
filed the company's mid-year 2001 report. She referred the Center to the
company's corporate public relations
office, which did not return the Center's calls. "While we should expect all
companies to abide by the lobbying reporting rules," said Larry Noble, the
Center's executive director, "it is particularly critical at this time for
the public to have the full picture of Enron's lobbying activities.
The Secretary of the Senate and Clerk of the House should move immediately to
make sure Enron's reports are complete and accurate."

Blair under pressure over government links to Enron By Andrew Grice and Marie
Woolf

Four ministers met executives of US energy giant - Key contacts between
Enron and Downing Street - Donald Macintyre: We won't escape the fallout
from the Enron scandal
Tony Blair was under pressure last night to reveal his involvement in
decisions by the Government that helped the American energy giant Enron
before its collapse. Downing Street sought to head off allegations of "cash
for access" by admitting four government ministers held a total of seven
meetings with Enron bosses between 1998 and 2000.
During this period, the Government abandoned a moratorium on the building of
new gas-fired power stations after pressure from Enron and it allowed a
subsidiary of the company to buy Wessex Water without an investigation by the
Monopolies Commission. Enron spent £36,000 on Labour Party functions between
1997 and 2000, including a gala dinner attended by Mr Blair.
