Time to tap more of Alaska for U.S. oil needs

Tony Phyrillas

With gas prices hovering around $3 per gallon and millions of Americans
facing the bleak prospect of heating their homes this winter, its time to
revisit the decision not to drill for oil in the frozen wasteland of
Alaska.

Although the Bush administration has been pushing for congressional
approval to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas
exploration for five years, Democrats repeatedly have blocked the
presidents energy initiatives.

We now see the fruits of the Democrats obstructionist policies
skyrocketing energy prices that threaten to sink the U.S. economy into
recession. Its time to stop pampering environmentalists and the Adopt A
Caribou Foundation and start thinking about whats best for our economy and
our people.

The damage caused by Hurricane Katrina to Americas oil production
capabilities in the Gulf of Mexico, coupled with the ongoing extortion
directed at the U.S. by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries
leaves us no choice but to fend for ourselves to meet our nations energy
needs. How much longer do we want to be at the mercy of OPEC, which
consists of nine Muslim countries and Venezuela, which is run by a
crackpot dictator.

We need to take advantage of all our resources, including opening more of
Alaska to oil and gas exploration. A quarter of the nations oil supply
already comes from Alaska, primarily from Prudhoe Bay, home of the largest
oil fields in North America.

The adjacent ANWR region has the potential to become Americas largest oil
reserve and would go a long way to reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
And the best thing of all is that we would set the price for a barrel of
oil not OPECs oil ministers.

Had the Clinton administration, which did nothing in eight years to
improve this countrys energy supply, had the foresight to push for
drilling in Alaska, oil could be flowing from the ANWR region today.
Experts say it will take at least eight to 10 years to bring oil
production in ANWR online. We dont have time to lose.

So next time you pay $50 at the pump to fill up your car, you can thank
Bill and Hillary Clinton and their environmental guru, Al Gore, for
neglecting the nations energy needs so they could count on the support of
environmental extremists at the polls.

You can also thank Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and Sen. Hillary Clinton for
bottling up the Bush energy plan for the past five years. What is the
Democrats energy policy? They dont have one other than opposing anything
President Bush proposes.

The left-wing propaganda machine and its comrades in the liberal media
have put out all sorts of deceptive information regarding drilling in the
ANWR region all designed to scare people into supporting the Democrats
"do-nothing" strategy.

Heres all you need to know about expanding oil drilling in Alaska:

Of the nearly 19 million acres of the ANWR region, only 1.5 million or
about 8 percent would be subject to exploration. The other 92 percent
wont be touched, giving caribou, polar bears and other wildlife plenty of
room to roam.

If oil is found in abundance, which is what geologists predict, the U.S.
treasury would receive billions of dollars in revenue money that we now
send to keep all those Arab sheiks living in the lap of luxury.

Oil exploration and eventual drilling in Alaska would create hundreds of
thousands of new jobs.

And for the Cindy Sheehan crowd (the ones who believe we liberated Iraq
to get its oil), we wouldnt have to invade any more Middle Eastern
countries for the oil because wed have plenty of it from domestic sources.

The United States has been pumping oil out of Alaska for decades without
any negative consequences. Prudhoe Bay is one of the safest facilities
anywhere in the world. Its also an area where technology and wildlife have
co-existed for decades. The Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline that runs the length
of the state has operated since the mid-1970s without any major problems.

Its time to end the appeasement of the "Chicken Little" environmentalists
and do whats best for this country. The United States has not built a new
oil or gas refinery since 1976 thanks to the hysterical environmentalists
and their Democratic allies in Congress.

We cant allow fringe groups to dictate energy policy at the expense of
whats best for the majority of Americans who want a reliable, affordable
source of energy. Oil and natural gas from the ANWR region would provide
just that.

Write to your congressman today and demand that he or she support
additional oil exploration in Alaska.
