UN Asked To Condemn Anti-Semitism
Stewart Ain - Staff Writer
The UN General Assembly has been asked by American Jewish leaders to adopt âin full and un-amendedâ the statement issued at the end of the recent European conference on anti-Semitism that called for an unambiguous condemnation of all acts of anti-Semitism.
Representatives of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations made the request in both a statement this week and during a private meeting here last week with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
âIt says you cannot justify [anti-Semitism],â Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents, said of the Berlin declaration. âWhat is being asked of every memberâ is to affirm that declaration.
During their one-hour meeting with Annan, the delegation discussed the increase in anti-Semitism coming from Islamic sources and the need to stop anti-Semitic incitement in the media, schools and elsewhere.
Partly as a result of last weekâs meeting, different Jewish organizations have been asked for input into a daylong meeting June 21 at the UN dealing with anti-Semitism, Hoenlein said.
He said also that Annan had reaffirmed his support for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharonâs proposal for an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and four settlements in the West Bank.
In addition, Hoenlein said, Annan said that there is a need for a unified Palestinian security force under responsible leadership to assure stability in the area after Israeli troops withdraw.
One source said the Jewish leaders also criticized Annan for making seemingly one-sided statements against Israel instead of taking a more even-handed approach. Annan is said to have insisted that he has always maintained a balanced position.
The delegation also requested that there be a point person in Annanâs office whom the Conference of Presidents could contact in the future. It was noted that last weekâs meeting was requested six months ago and that it was arranged three months later.
âWe asked that the secretary-general appoint a point person to facilitate communication, instead of us having to go through regular channels,â Hoenlein said, adding that Annan agreed.
