The Japanese Red Army is an international militant group formed around 1970 afterbreaking away from Japanese Communist League-Red Army Faction. The JRA was led by Fusako Shigenobu until her arrest in Japan in November 2000. The JRA's historical goal has been to overthrow the Japanese Government and monarchy and to help foment world revolution. Earlier today, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine initially took responsibility, but later an official from the organization denied any involvement. "We condemn these cowardly attacks against American citizens and we call on Muslims and Arabs in the united States to provide any assistance possible in this tragic incident." Said Fadi Chahine, executive editor for Middle East News Wire, a North Carolina based news service company. "In the past, when attacks against the U.S. occurred many Americans and Middle East Specialist have been quick in blaming American Muslims and Arab-Americans, and we hope this will not be repeated." Chahine added. The spokesman for a Washington-based Islamic advocacy group, Ibrahim Hooper, says he is devastated by the tragic events. "Of course, all Muslims anywhere would condemn utterly these apparently vicious and cowardly acts of terrorism against innocent civilians," he said. "And we would join with everyone in calling for the swift apprehension and punishment of the perpetrators. No political cause could ever be assisted by such immoral acts." Mr. Hooper is national communications director of the Council on American Islamic Relations. He says it is too early to know if the attacks are in reaction to American foreign policy. The American Muslim Political Coordination Council (AMPCC), today also condemned the apparent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington and offered condolences to the families of those who were killed or injured. "American Muslims utterly condemn what are apparently vicious and cowardly acts of terrorism against innocent civilians." The statement said" 1) We feel that our country, the United States, is under attack 2) All Americans should stand together to bring the perpetrators to justice 3) We warn against any generalizations that will only serve to help the criminals and incriminate the innocent 4) We offer our resources and resolve to help the victims of these intolerable acts, and we pray to God to protect and bless America © 2001 Middle East News Online.
