Peace at any cost is a prelude to war!

Fellow troops (best term to include all services, so no one gets offended)!

Thanks for all the responses to my initial attempt to establish comms. They
came from as far as Canada. As you military types know, good commo is the
hard part of any operation. Felt like being adopted into an exclusive
military outfit "Civil War/Hack-style" (bring rifle, horse, blanket…) - a
truly "purple" one at that. You folks out there could teach the Pentagon a
lesson in thinking "Joint." Whoever is best suited for the mission
(training, equipment, prep) gets the nod to execute.

I am impressed with the knowledge and experience we collectively represent.
Knowledge and information is power! I am full of encouragement that our
newsletter will grow into a powerful reform movement. I stress "reform"
because we are not into rebellion but want the hard working people of our
armed forces to have input. The ones, who would be called upon to sacrifice
for the cause and the Nation -- not too many General Officers and Colonels
fall in combat nowadays.

Got tons of mail from our old soldiers whose hearts are still with the
troops. Thanks for pulling with us. A lot of you pointed to the rift
between the civilian population and the military. I wholeheartedly agree. I
think our expansion move must encompass our civilian populous, our civilian
leaders, even our school kids. We must engage the current military's
leadership into a full-scale debate, to include also the upper echelon rank
structure that is currently trying to tune us out. Their excuse - VOTG is a
"bitch sheet" for Lt Col/Cdr and below. Wrong!

For those who try to label us as a forum for the white, angry male, I want
to stress that we are not against women and minorities. That would be
un-American! We respect all military people who make a contribution to this
great Nation and in the right position. However, we cannot tolerate the
freeloaders of social experimentation - the Private "Flakes," Hack talked
about; people that exploit a quota promotion system; and soldiers recruited
under the banner of the "Be all You can Be," placed in the Armor and
Infantry and turn out to be colorblind or otherwise physically unfit to do
their jobs. Why: because they could get others killed in combat and waste
the taxpayer's hard-earned money in peacetime.

Our focus must be on values. Not just the military's plastic value cards
but the values that made this country. Strong belief in our Constitution,
the unity of the Nation, and the conviction that we should contribute to
this nation and not just exploit it. Thank God, we're not a militaristic
nation -- but we all should take an interest in what our military has done
for us, what mistakes it has made, and what it should do for us in the
future. As the centerpiece of our freedom, our military must be led by
people who live by our American ideals and not those that emulate British
Royalty.

To the small number of negative voices, most from the cozy offices of the
"five-sided wind-tunnel," the Pentagon, who claim people like Hack and I
shirked our duty, I respond: we did our duty for more than twenty years
each of us, in war and peace, and we will continue to do our duty as
responsible citizens. Rest assured, should a real war ever break out, you
can count on both of us to enlist as a rifle team (I might have to carry
Hack's "Ruck" over the longer distances).

To work on the contents of the newsletter, I would like to get some more
input from the leaders. Here is what I perceive you are interested in:

Letters to Hack and the editor (relevant issues)
Guest Writer of the month (combat experience or topic of national interest)
Enlistment reenlistment issues
Exit of qualified junior and mid-grade officers
Good Leadership - examples and principles (mentor our junior leaders - they
don't seem to get it from most of their superiors!)
Bad Leadership/Ticket punching - tell us about it (we'll change the data so
you can't be traced).
Weapons systems and equipment - tell us if the stuff works or not
(unclassified pls)
Veteran's issues - i.e. medical (why don't we treat them right???)
Veterans and troops working with civilian communities and schools.
Successful veterans in politics making a difference - tell us about you.
Medal of Honor Winners - tell our kids about them. These guys were real,
not Japanese Pokemon.
Critical legislation affecting military people.
Humor - need to lighten up some!

!!!!! Beware that our letter is still limited in scope so we can reach as
many email users as possible. If you cannot get the letter by E-mail, look
it on the Web-Page at:
http://www.freeyellow.com:8080/members7/rlmcmahon/

 -- This Week's focus: Women's issues. Political correctness seems to
prevent us from resolving critical readiness questions.

 -- Upcoming: Leadership Special. Junior officers of all services speak
out vs. senior officer opinions that "all is well on Walton's Mountain."

Until next time, hold the line and soldier on. Wherever you are, pass on
VOTG, and make sure it hangs in every major HQ (make the senior brass
notice it!).

We'll cover your backs.
ZIMM.

HACK ON TARGET!!! - READER RESPONSE TO BETHESDA

Combat rule: If you think you just hit'em --- hit'em again!! ZIMM

Subject: Re: Bethesda

I just read your column on Bethesda. I don't know who your forward
observers are, but they are masters in the control of field artillery. Pour
it on.

Your assertions of a tiered standard are quite accurate. In fact, recently
the ex-chief of the Navy Nurse Corp came to Bethesda for her husband's
surgery. She could have insisted upon care by a nurse anesthetist, but did
not, and he received care from an all MD team. Because she was the prime
motivator in encouraging the change in the Navy standard for nurse
anesthetists, I find this a bit hypocritical.

It may have taken fifteen years longer than prophesized, but it appears
that Orwell was right, "Some are more equal than others..."

GETTING ATTENTION!!
THE MAINTENANCE LT's STRUGGLE CONTINUES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ZIMM NOTE: Remember the young maintenance officer who told us about the
lack of readiness, planning and chain of command involvement in his unit?
His female Cdr who enjoys the powers and perks of command, but can't
participate in physical training? This is the continuation of his struggle.
Someone in a maintenance chain of the SAME DIVISION read the letter and
became concerned. POSITIVE OUTCOME:  Finally the big guys started listening
to the folks who make the wheels turn. Hopefully it's not just to smooth
things over or to suffocate the cries for change. By the way - The BIG GUYS
were looking for the young whistleblower in the WRONG OUTFIT. …but  our
"Wrench" has made a difference! We should be proud of these young officers
who put it on the line for the truth. They are the guys I loved to have in
my tank unit…. ready to fight!
It gets deep over here. The unit CDR pulled all the LT's in and talked to
us. Big deal, they just wanted to know who sent the message to VOTG (of
course there would be no repercussions). BUT the word is that it went to
someone higher. It then went to the DIV Spt Cdr. He had a meeting with all
the LT's right after the Cdr -- first time I have ever talked to him and he
apologized for it. All he wanted, was to listen to us. Lots got said today
but not much will probably get done. The CG did this a few months ago.
I still have no confidence that anything will happen. I mean the CG did
this "spiel" and the same crap still goes on. NO one is planning. The DIV
Spt Cdr took a lot of info down but I have no confidence. Sure a few field
grades are shaken up …but I do that every day. Bottom line: when do we fix
it? When do we plan? These colonels are shocked these majors are shocked,
these generals are shocked and they want to know what's up? But do they
want to fix it? They are colonels they are majors they are generals. Fix
it. You have the power!!! Give the order, sir and I will march. That's the
Army. That's the way it should be.  We'll have to talk.
The truth is we (the LTs) have no confidence in our chain. The DIV Spt Cdr
should have been told that.
………so far, I have received many calls in support. "They" think it's either
me or another officer in the unit. My CSM called and said it was
outstanding. Hell it is all over the division from what I have been told.
The comments range from not the right thing to have done to the greatest
ever done but one theme rings throughout -- it was the truth!!!
Loyalty issues have been brought up, integrity issues, and all manner of
West Point cadet BS. I was taught that honesty and truth, among others,
were the most prized commodities an officer could have. Strange realm we
live in if Cadet Honor codes are hailed as law.
