>From The Publisher:
The extraordinary and glamorous adventure of one of the most renowned
private investigators of all time, Vegas P.I. is the fascinating and
often moving autobiography of a genuine American original - Lake
Headley. Filled with major crime cases and startling revelations, it
chronicles his thirty-five perilous and action-packed years as a
first-rank detective defending the disenfranchised and battling crime on
the streets of Las Vegas and beyond. Headley relates his early years
working for the Las Vegas/Clark County Sheriff's Department, a force
which more closely resembled a vigilante committee than a law
enforcement agency. After five years Headley's conscience and stomach
got the better of him and, in 1962, he resigned and set out on his own,
launching one of the most spectacular careers in criminal justice
history. He takes us back to a period of gambling history when the Mob
ruled the strip and he busted some of the most ingenious scams cheaters
ever devised. Headley gives never-revealed details of the famous "Friars
Club Cheating Case" in which celebrities such as Phil Silvers, Debbie
Reynolds, Tony Martin, and Groucho Marx lost more than a million dollars
in a rigged gin rummy game at the exclusive Friars Club in Beverly
Hills. Headley chronicles his wild adventures with the legendary bounty
hunter "Papa" Ralph Thorson. He pursues a dangerous involvement with the
American Indian Movement (AIM) after their 72-day Wounded Knee
occupation, which ultimately evolved into the most massive private
defense investigation in history. Fascinating new information is
revealed about the Patty Hearst kidnapping, the Symbionese Liberation
Army (SLA), and the mysterious conflagration and gun battle in which 6
members of the SLA died in a house in Los Angeles although they
apparently were trying to surrender. Among his many brushes with
celebrity, he was called in to investigate the Bloomingdale-Morgan
Affair, a murder case that involved sado-masochistic sex and a cast of
ch

>From Richard Paul Snyder - BookList:
Real-life detectives are said to follow a rather boring vocation. Not
Lake Headley II; he found himself mixed up in some of America's most
publicized events, such as the FBI's battles with Native Americans at
Wounded Knee, Arizona investigative reporter Don Bolles' death, Patti
Hearst and the Symbionese Liberation Army, and federal judge Harry
Claiborne's impeachment. Headley began as a Las Vegas deputy sheriff,
but setting up and gunning down a drug addict went against his grain, so
he resigned. He and another ex-deputy set up their own Vegas detective
agency; then Headley hooked up with legendary bounty hunter "Papa" Ralph
Thorson. Neither job suited him, but when the famous defense attorney
Luke McKissack took Headley along to Wounded Knee, the PI discovered his
true life's work--aiding underdogs--which in turn earned Headley the
enmity of a good many law enforcement agents: the inside scoop on all
the aforementioned cases is that the bad guys are the ones who are
supposed to be protecting us--sheriffs, FBI agents, D.A.'s, U.S.
attorneys general, etc. Those interested in the nuts and bolts of
private detection should look elsewhere, but there are some fascinating
stories here.

>From Publisher's Weekly - Publishers Weekly:
For 30 years, Headley, who died in 1992, worked as a private
investigator in Las Vegas. This account of his career, written with
Hoffman, his coauthor on Contract Killer, is shocking and exciting. The
earlier book involved the killing of Jimmy Hoffa, so little attention is
given that case here. But Headley does present startling revelations
about his other investigations. He presents well-documented evidence
that Donald DeFreeze, head of the Symbionese Liberation Army, kidnappers
of Patty Hearst in 1974, was a police informant and an agent
provocateur. Headley also worked on the investigation of the 1976 murder
of reporter Don Bolles in Phoenix, and concludes that certain of
Arizona's public figures conspired in a cover-up of the case (the
convicted killers, Max Dunlap, a contractor, and James Robinson, a
plumber, are to be retried). (Aug.)
