COMMENTARY Number 32 April 9, 2002 MOSSAD MONITORS SECRET TALKS BETWEEN TOP ARAFAT AIDE AND SENIOR OFFICIALS IN SADDAM'S GENERAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY IN BEIRUT by Gordon Thomas (EXCLUSIVE) Mossad agents in Beirut have monitored secret talks between one of Yasser Arafat's leading aides, Mustafa Mugrabi, and senior officials of Saddam's General Intelligence Service. The meeting took place in the aftermath of the recent Arab League summit in the city. Mossad sources say the meeting was to discuss joint plans between the PLO and Iraq to launch terrorist attacks in the region. A tape of the meeting is likely to be played to the U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, when he arrives in Israel later this week. Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, is also considering making it public - hoping to score a similar public relations coup that the United States achieved last year when it released the video of Osama Bin-Laden exulting over the attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. However, after recent challenges to the veracity of documents released by Israel showing Arafat's alleged involvement in financing suicide bombers, Mossad director, Efraim Halevy, has yet to endorse the release of the tape. Sources close to Mossad insist the tape includes a list of strategic targets in Israel and Saudi Arabia which could be attacked if America finally goes to war against the Saddam regime. The tape also contains references that any target will require the joint approval of Arafat and the head of Iraqi intelligence, Uday Hussein, Saddam's eldest son. Sharon is reportedly anxious to let Powell hear the tape - so that he can better understand the duplicity of Arafat. It is no secret that Sharon is keen to involve the PLO leader in ties to Saddam - so that he can win more support from President Bush. Mossad claims that at the Beirut meeting, Mugrabi, who is the shadowy PLO aide who acts as Arafat's link-man in Lebanon with Hezbollah, promised to provide Iraq with 37 blank passports to facilitate its agents' easier access to the West. The passports are believed to be from Pakistan, Lebanon and Morocco. At least two may also be Jordanian travel documents. Last weekend, with the backing of Mossad, two CIA agents in Israel were allowed access to Arafat in his Ramallah compound to question him about the meeting. He denied all knowledge of it. But an Israeli defence spokesman said that "was par for the course." Meanwhile the fighting in Bethlehem has intensified. Windows in the Church of the Nativity, believed by two billion Christians to be the birthplace of Jesus, have been shattered. Some of them were over a century old and depicted Biblical scenes. Smoke continues to rise from the compound around the Church. The Israeli troops say they are not responsible. But the town's mayor insisted that he had seen renewed heavy fire directed against the Church. The continuing military action has been condemned by the Pope as a "vendetta." His senior prelate in Israel has said "the Israelis barbarians are at the very heart of our Christian faith. Attacking the birthplace of Christ is unparalleled outrage."
