Bush was once arrested for cocaine possession was yanked Thursday by its publisher! As first reported in the opening segments of Rush Limbaugh's nationally syndicated radio show on Thursday, publishing house St. MARTIN'S PRESS decided to save the trees and stop the presses on the book FORTUNATE SON after a newspaper revealed the book's author, J.H. Hatfield, allegedly served time in a Texas prison for hiring a hit man. "Since Mr. Hatfield's credibility has been called into serious question, we feel compelled to suspend publication," said Sally Richardson, president, publisher and soul of St. MARTIN'S PRESS. Bush campaign spokeswoman Mindy Tucker cheered the publisher's action. "We think it was a responsible decision and the right thing to do," she said. On the campaign trail in South Carolina, Bush told reporters, "Obviously, if he's a convicted felon, his credibility is nothing. But, his credibility was nothing to begin with, because his story was totally ridiculous." "Hatfield, reached by telephone at his home in Arkansas, said lawyers had instructed him not to talk to reporters about the situation," the NEW YORK TIMES is reporting in a Friday Page One story. Pause. The book had received a rain forest printing of 90,000 copies, 70,000 of which were already in stores or on their way there. The 20,000 copies still in warehouses would not be shipped, declared Richardson. Frank Bruni at the TIMES reports: "A spokesman for the Department of Criminal Justice in Texas provided records on Thursday showing that a man named James H. Hatfield was convicted in 1988 of solicitation of capital murder and served five years in a Texas prison. The spokesman said that the man was paroled in 1993 and put under the supervision of a parole agency in Arkansas, where the book's author lives." The DALLAS MORNING NEWS on Thursday is reporting that a Mr. Hatfield "was separately convicted of embezzlement." "Federal court records reveal that Hatfield pleaded guilty in 1992 to embezzling thousands of dollars in federal housing money," writes DMN's Pete Slover.
