:: THE TERRORISM CONTINUES: Claude Knopp, 29, of Tiberias, was killed
Thursday and eight others were injured, several severely, after a
bomb-laden taxicab exploded near the Israeli Arab village of Umm el-Fahm
at the Mei Ami junction, HA'ARETZ reported. The security sources reported
that they were on a alert Thursday morning for a car bomb which was on its
way to Tel Aviv. An emergency roadblock spotted the suspected vehicle, a
van, and police began a chase. When the terrorists saw a police roadblock
at Mei Ami blocking their way, they detonated the bomb in the vehicle.

In another attack, three Israelis were wounded - including one woman in
serious condition - when Palestinian terrorists shot at them shortly after
4 PM Tuesday. The attack occurred between the north-Jerusalem industrial
zone of Atarot and the Ofer army base, south of Ram'Allah. A similar
attack later in the afternoon near Tulkarm miraculously produced no
injuries. Palestinians shot at a passing Israeli car, but although bullets
hit the car, no one was hurt.

A Kfar Saba man killed in an orchard in Moshav Hagor on Monday. Police
first believed the dead man was the victim of a work accident. Additional
investigation revealed the man had been shot in his neck and chest. The
victim, whose name has not been cleared for release, left a wife and two
children.

Meanwhile, Israel Defense Forces [IDF] Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Shaul Mofaz
warned Friday that security forces would step up actions to prevent terror
and apply pressure against terrorists and those who support them, HA'ARETZ
reported. In an interview on Israel Radio, Mofaz said, "If the Palestinian
Authority [PA/PLO] does not take strong action to stop the violence,
Israel will be forced to make serious preparations for the future." He
further warned, "If the PA does not act against the terror, Israel will be
forced to act in its place, through all possible channels."

:: HAMAS READY TO STRIKE WHEN SHARON TAKES OFFICE: Flyers distributed by
the Izzadin al-Kassim faction of the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza
on Saturday call for an escalation in attacks against Israeli targets. The
flyers that were sent to news agencies stated that immediately after Prime
Minister-elect Ariel Sharon takes office, suicide attacks will resume
inside the "Green Line," adding there are suicide bombers ready and
waiting for orders to begin attacks. The heightened security alert
following last Thursday's Wadi Ara taxi bombing is to remain in force at
least through the Purim [3 March] holiday, even in the absence of concrete
information over planned terror attacks. Additional police and even some
IDF units will patrol the Green Line and tighten checkpoints, in
additional to the beefed-up presence of security forces in public places.

The PA/PLO has recruited into the ranks of its various security
organizations a number of Hamas terrorists who were released from
Palestinian prisons in recent months. According to Israeli security
sources, these men have already taken active roles in attacks against
Israeli soldiers and civilians. Last October, days after the outbreak of
the Al Aqsa Intifada, the PA/PLO released dozens of Hamas and Islamic
Jihad terrorists that it was holding in its prisons. Many of the released
inmates had been involved in shooting attacks against Israeli targets and
in the planting of bombs. It has recently become apparent that some of
these former inmates are carrying out their activities while in the
uniform of the PA/PLO's security organizations. The PA/PLO had recruited
former inmates to its police forces before the Intifada. However, in most
cases they belonged to Fatah and had carried out attacks against Israeli
targets prior to the signing of the Oslo accords in 1993. Nearly all Hamas
and Islamic Jihad operatives have been released from PA/PLO prisons. Those
still held, including Mahmud Abu-Hanud, the leading Hamas terrorist from
Shechem who escaped an IDF attack against his stronghold last year, are
being kept in "protective custody." In a sense the PA/PLO are providing
protection for Abu-Hanud, and others like him, against possible Israeli
attack.

:: SHARON WILLING TO RELAX ECONOMIC SANCTIONS: Prime Minister-elect Ariel
Sharon on Sunday sent a message to PA/PLO Chairman Yassir Arafat via
visiting US Secretary of State Colin Powell – indicating Israel’s
willingness to relax the economic sanctions imposed on the PA/PLO. Sharon
added that funds would be transferred to the PA/PLO by Israel only after a
total cessation of daily violence and terror attacks. He added that as
soon as Israel saw clear signs that Arafat was truly working towards
bringing an end to the violence, he would be ready to arrange a meeting
between the two.

The Middle East Newsline reports that Israel is allowing Iraqi supplies to
enter the Palestinian areas. The move comes despite warnings by Israeli
security officials that the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is
using the aid to bolster support for Baghdad among Palestinians and
increase coordination with the PA/PLO for any war against Israel.
Diplomatic sources said six trucks loaded with medicine and equipment were
cleared by Israeli authorities for entry into YESHA [Judea, Samaria and
Gaza]. The trucks contained equipment and milk donated by Iraq and Qatar
and which arrived from Jordan. Iraq has also pumped in more than $6
million to families of Palestinians killed in clashes with Israel,
Palestinian sources said. The number is disputed by Israeli sources, who
said that most of the money went to pay Iraqi agents in YESHA to purchase
weapons. The EU has pledged to give $54.6 million to the PA over the next
six months. The grant was agreed by EU foreign ministers, who called for a
donors' conference to be held by April.

:: FROM THE "WE TOLD YOU SO" DEPARTMENT ...: Imad Faluji, the Palestinian
National Authority’s Communications Minister, admitted on Friday that the
five-month-old uprising against Israel had been planned since the Camp
David peace talks failed in July, contradicting past contentions of a
spontaneous outburst from Palestinians on the street. Faluji stated it was
a mistake to think that the intifada was sparked by Israeli Prime
Minister-elect Ariel Sharon’s controversial visit to Al-Aqsa mosque
compound in late September. He spoke during a PLO rally in Ain al-Hilweh
refugee camp outside of Sidon. He also said the PLO was reviving its
"military action" groups to escalate the fighting against Israel and
called for a meeting of Arab defense ministers to "face up to Israeli
aggression." "The PLO is going back to the 60s, 70s and 80s. The Fatah
Hawks, the Kassam Brigades, the Red Eagle and all the military action
groups are returning to work," he told a crowd of nearly 2,500 people who
included local Palestinian faction leaders.

:: US SLAMS ISRAELI "HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS" WHILE PLO MURDERS
COLLABORATORS: In a country-by-country report on human rights practices
released on Monday, the US State Department said Israel had committed
numerous serious abuses since the outbreak of the Intifada, used excessive
force against Israeli Arabs and Palestinians during demonstrations, and
poorly treated Palestinian security detainees. "It ignores the fact that
Israel is engaged in a war," Ken Bricker, a spokesman for the American
Israel Public Affairs Committee, said. "The report ignores the fact that
... the Palestinian Authority [PA/PLO] made a strategic decision to opt
for violence." The Anti-Defamation League called the report "unfair and
distorted" and said it ignored "ongoing incitement by the PA/PLO and the
daily attacks against Israeli civilians."

Meanwhile, a 37-year-old Arab man suspected of providing intelligence
information to Israeli security agents was shot to death in a PA/PLO jail
in the city of Shechem. The victim was arrested by PA/PLO security
officials who charged him with corroborating with Israeli authorities. He
was shot while in jail and died in a Shechem hospital.

:: MOSLEMS AGAINST CHRISTIANS: "First the Saturday people, then the Sunday
people." This is how some observers describe the strategy of the Moslems,
who see as their this-worldly destiny the replacement not only of Judaism
[the Saturday people] but also of Christianity. Moslem anti-Christian
hatred has come to the fore in Israel; Israeli Maj.-Gen. Ya'akov (Mendy)
Orr, IDF liaison for Judea and Samaria, told the Knesset Foreign Affairs
and Defense Committee this week that "vandalism of Christian graves" in
the PA/PLO-controlled areas has been on the rise of late. According to
Orr, some fifty Christian families from the Beit Lechem-area town of Beit
Sahour alone tried to emigrate in the last month. On March 3, 1999,
then-US Senator Connie Mack, who had just returned from a visit in Israel,
told the Senate, "I had another profound meeting during the week. I met
one evening, privately - secretly - with Arabs who were being persecuted
for the Christian faith... One man [who was arrested by the PA/PLO police]
was beaten and hung from the ceiling by his hands for many hours on
charges of selling land to Jews, [but] he was poor and had no land. [His
son said he was] held hostage to prevent him from talking with people
about his faith... It caused me to ask, 'How can the people of Israel find
peace when the Palestinian Authority engages in coercion and torture based
only upon religious beliefs?'" In January 2000, the PA/PLO forcefully took
over the Russian Orthodox church in Jericho. In July 1997, PA/PLO
para-military police burst into a monastery in Hebron, beat and dragged
out the monks and nuns, injuring five monks and three nuns. The Zionist
Organization of American (www.zoa.org) reports that two American courts
recently granted asylum to Palestinian Christian Arabs, on the grounds
that they would be persecuted for their religious beliefs if they return
to PA/PLO-controlled territory.
