03-22-01: What freshly censored hell is this?

Keeping up with the junta's latest atrocities . . . and the mainstream
media's enabling thereof

By Tamara Baker

SAINT PAUL, MN, March 21, 2001 (APJP)-The biggest problem with documenting
all of the atrocities committed by the illegal junta currently squatting
in the White House is simply where to begin. One person cannot cover it
all. Every new day brings up some new tidbit of corruption or incompetence
that makes one, after a time, resort to using Dorothy Parker's old
telephone greeting: "What fresh hell is this?"

Some progressive commentators have alleged that the mainstream press ran
interference for Shrub over the past two years on the idea that once he
was elected, his corrupt administration would provide factually-based and
ratings-rich scandal-a-minute fodder. Unlike with the Clinton
Administration, where the press and the RNC had to work very hard to
create scandal where none existed (quick: How many Whitewater convictions
did Kenny Starr get?), the Bushies had dozens of ready-made scandals of
all varieties, just ripe for the plucking by a scandal-hungry press.

There are some problems with this scenario:

First off, George W. Bush did not win the election. Not only did he lose
the popular vote by over half a million ballots, it is becoming
increasingly clear, through both the results of the Florida media recounts
and the stellar reporting of Gregory Palast, that he didn't win the
electoral-college vote, either. It was only through the skullduggery of
the Scalia Five that his nannies were able to steal the White House for
him.

Second off, the media, far from digging into the fraudulent Usurper Boy
and his minders, has been going out of their way to prop him up. Since he
can't open his mouth without embarrassing either himself or his cabinet
members, the press has instead settled for virtually ignoring all but a
fraction of his actions, preferring instead to build him up by continuing
to trash the memory of his predecessor.

This means that, instead of hearing on the nightly news about how Ralph
Nader's group Public Citizen has exposed the California "energy crisis" as
a fraud perpetrated by wholesale energy companies such as Bush's biggest
lifetime backer, Enron, we instead are treated to yet another mythical
"Clinton scandal" involving how Hillary's new office space is-quel
horreur!-the most expensive of any Senator (what they don't tell you,
until the very end of the story, is that New York City real estate,
particularly that near the Mayor's office, is very expensive, period-and
that she actually moved from Moynihan's old offices because staying there
would have cost far more than does her new location!).

To quote from the very last paragraph of the AP story in question,

" . . . Clinton is saving taxpayers money by moving into 780 Third Av.
rather than taking over the Chrysler Building offices of her predecessor,
Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan. He was paying $280,000 a year, but that
would have jumped to $627,000 under a new lease . . ."

Isn't it interesting that the networks could always find a way to
broadcast sound bites of Ralph Nader and his associates attacking Al Gore,
but somehow just don't feel that Nader attacking Bush, or Enron, rates any
airtime? What was that again about the alleged "liberal media"?

Another recent BushBaby atrocity, that of threatening to ignore the expert
opinion of the American Bar Association when considering nominees for the
federal judiciary, has alarmed even noted Republicans like John Dean. If
this had happened under Bill Clinton, the press would be all over it like
Rush Limbaugh on a cream pie, and in this case their fervor would be
absolutely justified. But instead, we get. . . . virtual silence.

And don't even get me started on the tax "cut" scam. The broadcast media
dutifully reports the numbers given them by Paul O'Neill and/or the RNC as
gospel, even though many conservative economists are aghast.

And the media is shielding the American people from the awful knowledge
that the folks overseas, both the people and their leaders, are shocked
and horrified at how such a corrupt gang of half-bright hacks could be
allowed to run the country. (You see, the folks overseas get more news
about America than what we ourselves get from our own media. A quick scan
of the BBC and the UK Observer and Guardian shows that.)

In view of all this, Dottie Parker's old tagline needs an update. In
America it should now read, "What freshly censored hell is this?"
