WJPBR Email News List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Peace at any cost is a Prelude to War! World farm area could support 10 bln people-experts Updated 10:00 AM ET August 22, 2000 HAMBURG (Reuters) - Current world cropland has the potential to support up to 10 billion people, almost twice the world's population, but disease, weather problems and water shortages ravage food production, scientists said Tuesday. "More than 50 percent of the yield potential is lost to diseases, weather conditions, a shortage of water and inadequate research," Hartwig Geiger, professor of genetics at the Hohenheim University, told a conference on crop science. Congress chairman Hubert Spiertz, another geneticist, agreed with Geiger's figures, but warned that the full yield potential of the world's farmed areas could never be realized. "That potential could never be fully achieved," he told a news conference on the last day of the international congress. Geiger said genetic research and the development of genetically modified (GM) crops can provide answers to malnutrition problems such as a lack of provitamin A. According to the World Health Organization, 125 million children worldwide suffer from a shortage of provitamin A, which can lead to blindness in the worst cases. Provitamin A deficiency was most severe in countries where rice is the staple diet, and a recently developed GM rice variety can provide 80 percent of the minimum required provitamin A amount, Geiger said. The congress warned in a statement that the failure to feed a growing population in a sustainable way would lead to "enormous environmental damage, social dislocation and reduced economic growth that will effect the whole world." ^ REUTERS@ *COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U.
