-Caveat Lector- ANWR FACT AND FICTION Posted on May 18th, 2006 By Kevin Kennedy in Uncategorized, ANWR, Legislation, Eskimos, Energy Security, West Coast, Energy Costs, Actions
There are so many holes in ANWR opponents arguments its hard to pick a place to begin. Ill start with one of my favorites - their obscene claim that its not worth ruining the pristine wilderness for 6 months worth of oil. This one is priceless! First, lets tackle the egregious ruin the pristine wilderness claim. The oil in ANWR lies beneath the Coastal Plain a vast, flat desert of tundra thats frozen solid 9 months of the year. There are no mountains and no trees. There are, however, roads, military installations, an airport, and the Inupiat Village of Kaktovik (whose residents, by the way, overwhelmingly support development in their backyard). Moreover, the 1.5 million-acre Coastal Plain is not designated wilderness. Congress and President Carter set the area aside in 1980 because of its enormous oil potential. They designated the remaining 17.5 million acres as wilderness/refuge areas off limits to development of any kind. Those facts aside, no good American wants to ruin any amount of our land, even if it is a largely uninhabited, frozen desert. Thats why any legislation to open ANWR has limited development to 2000 acres (or 0.01% of ANWR) and mandated use of the most advanced exploration and production technologies available. Not to mention the fact that the industry would operate under the strictest environmental regulations in place anywhere in the world. And finally, lets get down to brass tacks on the wildly absurd only 6 months worth of oil nonsense. Start with the USGS mean estimate of recoverable oil in ANWR 10.4 billion barrels. In order to exhaust ANWRs 10.4 billion barrels in 6 months, we would have to pump 58 million barrels per day down the trans-Alaska pipeline. That would be quite a feat considering the pipeline has a maximum capacity of just 2 million barrels per day. In reality, ANWR has the potential to supply America with an additional 1.5 million barrels per day for 30 years thats equivalent to 30 years worth of Saudi imports. Theres plenty more emotional and irrational arguments to debunk, so stay tuned. In the meantime, please visit the ANWR Action Center and sign the petition, write a letter to your Congressmen, or submit a letter to your local paper.
