British MPs driven to drink by failure
LONDON

The youngest and brightest of Britain's Members of Parliament are turning to drink
because they are failing to make the impact on politics they dreamed of - or at least,
that's the view of one veteran MP.

The problem is getting so bad, according to opposition Conservative MP Teddy
Taylor, that many of his colleagues "have difficulty in walking along the corridors in
a straight line".

This week's The Caterer and Hotel Keeper magazine said beer supplies to the
grand Palace of Westminster on the banks of London's river Thames - which
combines the House of Commons and the House of Lords - have doubled since last
October.

The Federation Brewery, which supplies the many bars and restaurants at
Westminster, said political regulars are now downing a total of 2,500 pints a month.

The steep rise in the consumption of beer - which is cheaper in the House of
Commons than in ordinary bars - appalled Taylor, a lifelong teetotaller.

"The commons chamber remains empty most of the time, while the multitude of
drinking dens are crammed full," he said.

"It is a great tragedy. There are many very good, talented young people who come
to the House of Commons thinking they can make a difference on the issues
affecting Britain," he said.

"But then they realise they have no power. And when they find they can't change
things ... they resort to the drinking dens."
