Hey.  Sorry I don't have time to read for detail but only general
content.  But someone asked re the above topic:


"Is such formation-flying consistent with commercial-pilot
practice (which airport officials claim to be the case)?"


The answer is:  Hell *NO!*  In fact, I would love to see an
official quote of these airport officals who are saying this.
Does anyone have it?  If so, please send it to me personally
since I'm getting CTRL in digest mode and will probably overlook
it.

I am a pilot and I or any other one will tell you that commercial
aircraft NEVER fly in formation.  Formation flying is done only
at airshows or perhaps more casually by a few private pilots,
but never, never commercially.  Commercial flights are governed
by IFR or instrument flight rules and must travel on specifically
defined air routes at a specifically defined range of altitudes.
These routes are plainly visible on any flight chart (a.k.a.
"map").  These "victor" airways are basically straight lines
of flight between cities.  More technically, we use "waypoints"
and "intersections" which are imaginary points in space used
for navigation between airports.  Although of course airways
cross each other, they aren't in a grid pattern and commercial
flights make it a point to keep as much time and space between
their plane and the next one as possible.
