Bermuda police resort to gunfire to subdue man HAMILTON (Reuters) - Police in
Bermuda shot a man twice with rubber bullets in what was thought to be the
first time the force in the British territory has fired at a suspect, a
police spokesman said. Officers opened fire on the machete-wielding man after
he allegedly refused to leave the roof of a house in Sandys parish in the
west of the island after threatening family members during a domestic
dispute. The 52-year-old man was hit in the stomach and leg but was not
seriously injured. A police spokesman confirmed the man had been shot by
armed officers from the emergency response team. "The man was armed and
acting in a very, very aggressive and hostile manner and it was a violent
situation. As a last resort the emergency response team was called out," the
spokesman said. Police sources told Reuters it is believed to be the first
time the force had fired on a suspect. Guns are illegal in the wealthy
22-square mile (57-sq km)holiday island where police are unarm
ed and crime levels are low. Gun crime is extremely rare on the mid-Atlantic
island 600 miles (960 km) east of North Carolina, but the colony's governor
and one of his staff officers were shot dead in 1973.
