protected recycle bin from Norton antivirus 2003 professional that
was exposing the problem. Turning this feature off has made the problem go
away.

When copying an EXE file there is no problem when the target does not exist
but it fails for me when the target is present leaving a directory in place
of the desired file.
Below is the sequence of commands to reproduce this.

$ mkdir exetest
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~
$ cd exetest
Probably not since this only applies to XP professional not XP home.
