I mentioned that less(1) was crashing the shell/cygwin environment.  I 
reinstallation of all packages seemed to have solved the problem.

But I'm continuing to see the same crash, and others just like it.  The 
following have resulted in the same type of crash:

   % vi

  % strings <somefilename> | less

After the last crash, I open a new bash shell and the latter command works fine.

When vi crashes, it leaves a zombie vi process in Windows' Task Manager, and 
bash lingers until vi is terminated.

I'm not sure how to debug this, or what else I can report here.  The cygcheck
