FWIW, my X problems went away when I downgraded to the
pre-6.8.99.901-1 versions of xorg-x11-* packages. Given my
experience and others' reported problems on this list,
I don't consider the 99 version stable. And, I understand
that there is no one currently maintaining it.

I, too, experienced the could not open default font 'fixed' problem
and the FAQ did not help me either. I was able to run X after changing
the Cygwin Default Text File Type from DOS/text to Unix/binary
during setup. Consider this a bug report.
