Hello R, I had the same problem due to a screensaver that resets my display resolution and depth. This is what worked for me: I've added an "-engine 1" option to my startsx command line. In your case this would be something like: exec $prog /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc $* -- /usr/X11R6/bin/XWin :0 -engine 1 -noreset -ac -nowinkill -clipboard -scrollbars #-multiwindow It's an underdocumented* parameter but the point is that it allows you to select a different engine for the screen output, and in this particular case the "-engine 1" selects an output engine that is not susceptible to changes in screen depth and/or resolution. As I said, it works for me, but YMMV.
