Have you tried using xmodmap ??? Like:
$ xmodmap K_Left=0xff51 K_Up=0xff52 K_Right=0xff53 K_Down=0xff54
or add the following to your .Xresources file in your $HOME directory:
xlogin*login.translations: #override \
Left: move-backward-character()\n\
Right: move-forward-cha

There are no events when pressing left and right arrow (cursor) keys.
There are events for up and down, though.
