Tom, Sound is not a service provided by *any* X Server (sound is not part of the X Protocol). Therefore it makes little sense that sound events would cause Cygwin/XFree86 to lock up. I suspect that something else is going on. Are you running Cygwin/XFree86 4.2.0? You can check by running
