In theory, it might be possible to annotate the X client window with a
property which tells XWin/xwinclip how to treat it's clipboard use, but since
the clipboard-owning window is often a h

Unfortunately, there is no similar system facility on Windows.
You can achieve a somewhat similar effect by copying the X server
shortcut to the startup group to start it automatically at login, at the
cost of slowing down system startup somewhat.

Start the server with the -nolock option.
This option is turned on automatically when you have a FAT filesystem,
but it seems this doesn't happen for exFAT filesystems.

I might have to reboot. I went back to 1.15.1-4 and everything
was fine, but now its not working again and same errors as before. :(

Problem
XWin.exe, are you expecting setup to reinstall that
file, even though the package which owns it has no updates?
While setup has many, many infelicities, I'm not sure this is one of them.
Patches are always thoughtfully considered.

doing the wrong things but
the same code runs fine on OSX+XQuartz and GCC-4.9.1.
I tried with XQuartz 2.7.8_beta1 and I couldn't reproduce that.
