BIOGRAPHY BRIEF: WHAT FAMOUS EXPLORER RESCUED HIS OWN EXPEDITION?
******************************************************************
In August 1914, this British explorer and his crew of 27 men set sail from
England with the goal of leading an expedition across the frozen continent
of Antarctica. When the expedition’s ship, the Endurance, became trapped
in ice and sank, this intrepid explorer and five handpicked companions set
sail in a 7-m (23-ft) boat for South Georgia, a collection of islands
located East of southern South America. Sixteen days later they arrived,
and several months later they rescued the remainder of the expedition. Not
a single member of the expedition was lost.

Who was this remarkable explorer?

His name is Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton. On May 10, 1916, Shackleton and
his five companions arrived on South Georgia.
