Research Study for Prevention of Osteoporosis

Past exclusion of women from clinical trials has limited knowledge of how diseases and
conditions, and their treatment, affect women differently from men. By volunteering for medical
research, women contribute to researchers' efforts to expand their knowledge of how best to
treat and prevent disease.

If you are interested in contributing to women's research you may want to participate in a
research study exclusively for women. This study will determine the effects of a medication
approved for lowering cholesterol in the prevention of bone density loss.

Approximately 28 million Americans suffer from osteoporosis, the majority of whom are women. 10 million individuals have a low bone mass, placing them at risk for this disorder.

ARE YOU AT RISK?

Risk Factors for Osteoporosis include:

*Having a family history of osteoporosis
*Having a small, thin build
*Being a postmenopausal woman
*Being physically inactive
*Smoking cigarettes
*Having a diet that is low in calcium

Qualified participants will receive study medication, calcium supplements with Vitamin D, health assessments, including a physical examination, and a bone density screening.
