Russian air force chief slams An-70
Col Gen Vladimir Mikhailov, commander-in-chief of the Russian Federation Air Forces (RFAF), used a 15 January press conference in Moscow to launch a scathing criticism of the Russian/Ukrainian An-70 transport aircraft.

UK advances armed transport aircraft study
Two industry teams will contest one of the most innovative elements of the UK's Future Offensive Air System (FOAS) programme, under which Royal Air Force (RAF) transport aircraft could receive the capability to deploy long-range cruise missiles and unmanned air vehicles (UAVs).

UNITED KINGDOM - Harrier GR.9 moves up a gear
The upgrade of the Royal Air Force's (RAF's) Harrier GR.7 fleet to an improved GR.9 configuration moved up a gear on 23 January 2003 with the award of a Pds150-plus million (US$243.5m+) contract to BAE Systems' Customer Solutions & Support (CS&S) business from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), writes Michael J Gething. The contract covers the continuation of the Harrier GR.9 sustainment and upgrade programme.

Solid-state lasers break out of the lab
The US Air Force Research Laboratory's Directed Energy Directorate has awarded contracts worth US$21.3 million each to Raytheon and TRW (now part of Northrop Grumman) to develop solid-state lasers (SSLs) with power outputs of 25kW. The effort forms part of the Joint High-Power Solid-State Laser program, which plans to conduct demonstrations against representative targets by the end of 2004. SSLs have the advantage of being smaller and lighter than other approaches; do not employ toxic or corrosive fluids, unlike chemical lasers; and require minimal logistic support.
