Sorry Pascal, but I confirm that with dt 3.4.0 on Windows my memory
card inside my card reader is treated exactly as a "normal" folder on
my HD/SSD: images files are not copied anywhere else. And the .xmp
files are created on my memory card.
I installed dt 3.4.0 using "darktable-3.4.0-win64.exe"
I implemented the automatic search for cameras and SD-cards. In short : any
device supported by the used gphoto2 library should be detected. If this not
happening it should be considered a bug and should be reported as an issue.

There are differences between 3.2.1 and 3.4.0 concerning importing:
3.2.1

-> import from memory card copies files to the HS/SSD
3.4.0
-> 2 buttons (file, folder)
-> camera (but not the card in the card reader) appears automatically
when detected
-> import from
The thumbnails in dt and Dolphin are nearly the same size.
And are you sure dt has a cache with the thumnails displayed in the
*Import* window?
