Every time I start darktable, I see the message:
1 local copy has been synchronized
But I have no "local copies". I did have and removed it via darktable's
menus.
How to correct, bug report, ???

I hadn't tried that, no. The value was set to 0. After increasing it and
restarting (seemed to be necessary) I no longer see the problem!
I'm not sure what a good value for this setting is. Is this system RAM, or
video RAM?

to use for mipmap cache"?

I'm a newish user of darktable, new to the list and the community.
Recently darktable's lighttable mode gets stuck in an endless loop of
preparing high-res previews for images. When multiple are visible, this
occurs in a cycle. If zoomed in to view a single image, that image appears
blurred,

sorry for the late reply, somehow this slipped. the curve in the pdf looks
reasonable, i added it to basecurve.c in git (will show only for canon 6d
models).
