After some hesitation (over installing an incorrect version) I did follow
Frederic's sugestion and installed an older version of 'x-settings-kde'. It
did the trick and dt's functionality is fully restored. Thanks to all.

This is a bug in KDE which should properly expose its double-click
settings to GTK applications, following the XSettings framework.
try installing xsettings-kde package which should fix that (it is
available on OBS and I already mentionned it on this mailing list in
the past.
