When I enable the CLUT, the monochrome module works but does nothing.

This is bug #11486, see https://redmine.darktable.org/issues/11486. It afflicts
2.2.2. If you're comfortable compiling from source, you could pull the latest
from the darktable-2.2.x branch, which should have a fix. Or, judging from that
branch, 2.2.3 with a fix is on the way!
