Funny, because when I used DT as my main raw editor I used drawn masks a
lot (!), but since I have a LR license and noticed how well and fast
sharpness, detail, highlight and shadow recovery work, I have never
missed it. ;)

One thought that I have had is that the mask be displayed in a
continuous range of color ... OK, maybe that sounds mad but this would
allow us to better view the data in the same way that we view elevations
on a map. Years ago my business was involved with satellite mapping and
we used color se
Hi, Terry, all - just to announce I have used the ToneEQ on a couple
of images now and I start to like it :-) Once you know how it
basically works it is fun to use (albeit lots of surprises may lurk in
the dark).

I own licences for Lightroom and the whole suite of Adobe products. I
choose Darktable as my preferred editing program because it is so good. I
especially love the drawn masks option using the path tool and then the
ability to feather the result after the fact to get invisible transitions.

Hi, István, kösenem,
the principle is understood. The ToneEQ-created parameter mask does
only indirectly relate the tonal correction to the image areas. The
suggested series of parametric masks and related tonal corrections
OTOH gives direct control.
The ToneEQ-internal mask assigns a certai
The pixel pipe order is critical and should not be hidden. But for most
users and most images the default order is fine. I can give an example of
why I change the pixel pipe order. I use Filmic to get the basic look to my
image, but then would like to tweak the contrast a little using curves. RGB

Hi Joerg,
I feel this is a very important module. By default it is activated to clip
the highlights and prevent a magenta tint. If the highlights are blown try
switching the method from clip highlights to reconstruct in LCh and this
may recover some details in the blown out highlights. I was amazed
Aurelien is a really talented developer that has brought some great
features to Darktable including Filmic, Tone Equalizer and I believe Color
Calibration. I have been impressed with how he has continued to improve
both Filmic and Tone Equalizer to make both of these modules more user
friendly and
Tone EQ allows you to apply different exposure compensations to
different parts of the image.
You can achieve a similar effect by creating several instances of
exposure, e.g. one without a mask, so set overall brightness; one with
+1EV to lift the shadows, with a parametric mask; and one with -1 EV
Turn it off, save as a preset, set the preset to auto-apply. But maybe
first try the 'recover in LCh' mode first, it works reasonably well.
You can also save that as a preset if you like the results.

Hi!
When one opens a raw file, there are a number of modules already applied
(sharpen, filmic rgb, color calibration, etc), most of them are a
necessary foundation for all further work. But I really hate the highlight
reconstruction module, it almost always creates some green specks around

Yes, I can see how it is confusing -- the luminance-based mask of the tone
equaliser versus the drawn/parametric "alpha-channel" mask used in the
darktable generic masking and blending function. Unfortunately both these
concepts are commonly referred to as a "mask" in the image processing

Hi, everybody,
I had some difficulty to understand what the term "mask" means with
the ToneEQ module. Only after watching Aurelien's tutorial
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzACn3l49HM), in particular the part
starting at 20:13, I grasped the idea (which is actually not hard to
