Hi,

I intend to upgrade my computer.

At present there is a
processor 4-core Phenom xt4 960
on a board with 16 GB DDR3 RAM
graphics AMD RX 460 - 2GB GDR5
storage is fully SSD,
OS Ubuntu + amdgpu-pro and Suse Tumbleweed for experiments.

The machine is sufficient for my regular usage, except(!)

Digikam tagging
Darktable RAW Procesing
Darktable exporting.

I think I should do an upgrade.
An other graphics card has to wait until the bitcoin craze slows down.

A little research suggests a new mainboard plus 16GB DDR4 RAM
and either of

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (6-core) clocked at 3.4 GHz
AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8-core) clocked at 3.2 GHz
Intel i5 8400 (6-core) clocked at 2.8 GHz and something called Turbo boost, which promises a higher speed with single-core tasks.

The most interesting ones are both Ryzens, but I wonder whether the Ryzen 6-core is good enough for what I do?

Any advice?

Peter
