Look in your .config/darktable/darktablerc file for this line:
"plugins/darkroom/histogram/panel_position=right"
Change the last word to "left". It's line 508 on my Linux machine.
Hit Ctrl-Shift-n to get rid of the thumbnail.

I notice that some demo videos are showing the histogram located
top-left on the darkroom display. This would be helpful on my rather
smaller screen. I do not see in the manual where to effect this option.
