Jeremy,
My Mother always told me I was a special case;-) You understand correctly, and I agree this goes against what many have learned, myself included, regarding exposing to the right. The idea is to expose -1 or -2 EV to avoid losing highlights. This approach has been much discussed on the Pentax forum, for example,
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5/135603-isoless-sensor.html
Given the low noise qualities of the sony sensor on the K5(and D700 among others) and the ability to shoot Av/Tv priority, it can be advantageous to set you aperture and shutter speed for desired effect, and limit iso to 80-1600 regardless of metered exposure. The reason to limit the iso is that the sensor will amplify the signal up to 1600. Beyond 1600, any amplification is digital and can be done as well, perhaps better, in post processing. The folks contributing to the thread above are much more knowledgeable and explain it better than I can so take a look and see what you think.

Regarding how this might be implemented in darktable, could exposure bias be used as an auto apply preset on a conditional basis as exposure, apterture, and others are?

Regards,
Joel

If I understand correctly what you are saying

* you are taking images with -1 EV
* you want to dial up +1EV automatically when importing into darktable

I can't help but ask... why did you dial that -1 EV in the first place if you like the 0 EV look better ? is this to avoid over-exposure ?

I don't think automatically dialing EV up based on exif is a good idea in the general case. Usually when people dial down the EV when taking a photo it is because they want a darker mood on their photo. I believe you are the special case...

It is not currently possible to use lua to do this either because darktable has no generic way to read exif data that lua could use (it's something that is highly under consideration but nothing has been done yet...)

I posted this earlier at Flickr but seems it is more appropriate here.

I am really digging Darktable! Using my Pentax K5 I have been
attempting the expose to the left strategy. So, I use the TAv
shutter Aperture priority mode limited to iso1600 and -1EV. In
doing this, most of my photos are underexposed. It is a bit of a
pain to have to manually adjust each one. I know I can create and
apply a style, but not all of my photos will be -1EV as I vary
based on conditions. Is it possible for darktable to read the EV
compensation line from the EXIF and automatically adjust exposure?

    And

Regarding the exif field, it is called Exposure Bias.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchangeable_image_file_format
    <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchangeable_image_file_format>
Question is how to get Darktable to use it?

Any thoughts on this matter are appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Joel
