Thanks, everyone, for the input on this! I'm so glad all is not lost. I've removed the images from my darktable library at home, and deleted the blank .xmp files. I am now at work on the Mac, and everything appears as it did, so my edits are safe, at least on the Mac. I just backed up the Mac's ..
