You need the DBD::Oracle 1.12 build, it fixed my problems ;)
It should be on the mirrors by now...

This might be dumb but:
I think you can add the 8.1.6 client software in a different
directory and compile DBD::Oracle with that...
Is the DBD::Oracle client and the database server on the same machine?

I have SUSE 7.2 and Oracle 9i installed
I can sqlplus to my database (happens to be 8.17 on NT)
DBI 1.20 compiles correctly
DBD::Oracle 1.10 gets to here with this error:
