I've been using 5.1x on some tests and it's slower, true :(
It's a big difference in speed, at least I notice that.

That's correct. In debian mysql-5.1 is on experimental, not on unstable.
There are still too many bugs in 5.1. I wouldn't trust my data to it
just yet.
