looking for some
assistance in identifying one of at least three sources currently
circulating for this show.
source#1: very
recently put into circulation is an Uher reel recorded by Jeffrey Siniawsky, Neil Merin, and Joel Smith. the lineage of the
source used in the analog to digital conversion is: Uher mic > Uher 4000 Report L 5" reels > MacIntosh pre-amp >
TEAC 1230 7" reel. this is a very good recording of the complete show,
except for the first minute of dark star. the crew were down front, mic
held high, on jerry's side.
source#2: this is
the segment used to supply the first minute or so of dark star. from an
alternate reel Jeff had when creating the 7" reel above.
source#3: as a
result of the #1 and #2 composite, it was discovered that another source
has circulated in cassette form that is demonstrably better. easily
on par with 8/6/74.
the distinguishing
features of this version are:
- the first 50
seconds or so contain Phil speaking to the crowd well before the stage crew had
finished setting up the equipment asking them to move back cause "...we don't
want any corrugated people down here..." he says they are going to play
another tape and be back when everything is set up.
- unfortunately, the
dark star to morning dew segment is spliced in from an alternate source which
sounds to me like it may be from one of the above two
sources.
my copy of the
cassettes are reportedly "master reels > master cassette (from which the
composite was made) > cassette > my cassettes" and they sound clean
enough that this should be accurate. my cassettes are about 10 years
old.
anyone else have
this third version and/or know more about the recording
culprits?
thanks,
