I know that Vinux CLI 2.1 could be installed on USB.
I have never upgraded it all the way to current, but if any distro could be
updated, a CLI version of Debian could.

file on that flash drive with a boot parameter or two in it which the iso
will find when booted and use? I'm asking this since I'm trying to help a
