I just uploaded a patched base-files_3.1.1.0.0.1.pure64_amd64.deb
to alioth.
yesterday evening I was trying to do a dist-upgrade but the base-files
package won't install. it says it's going to try to overwrite
/usr/X11R6/lib64 which is in xfree86-driver-synaptics package.

That would be a bug of xfree86-driver-synaptics and nvu. If we even
have a usr/X11R6/lib64 link then it belongs in the xfree86
package. The link in base-files is just a hack because it is easier to
patch.
should I open a bug for this on xfree86-driver-synaptics?
I tried removing the package,

Is there a version of RealPlayer that will run on AMD64 (as a plugin to
Firefox)?
If so, where can it be found?

Hi,
I am totally new to installing w/o downloadable bootable ISO cds. :-)
Can anyone point me to the docs to get started with this.
Do I have to install on a 32-bit machine, compile it and build my own
bootable CD for my AMD-64 system?

Joaquin,
By all means, bootable CD's are available. You should start here:
http://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/30192/21/debian-amd64-howto.html
In particular, the Chapter: Installing Debian GNU/Linux for amd64, discusses
the resources available to install AMD64.

Have you tried the sk98lin module? You might want to check

I've run across something I've never seen before on x86. I
currently have python2.3_2.3.4-18 installed on my system but
whenever I do 'apt-get source python2.3' it downloads
python2.3_2.3.4-16. Why isn't it grabbing -18?
Well, I'm not able to track down the exact problem, but
the python2.3_2.3.4-18_amd64.deb package currently available from
alioth is hosed. I attached my sources.list for reference.
Here's what I've tried so far. First I did 'apt-get
