the end I installed g77 fortran compiler (3.4.4-5) too. Than the
./configure only complained about not being able to find gsl (gnu
scientific library).

but it is not clear to me if it is only for 32bit i386 packages.

I did a second update/upgrade cycle (about 5 minutes after the first)
and 2.71 was found - it fixes this problem.
