APM & or ACPI Power Management for notebook ?

I try tu put the APM power management ON to compile a 2.6.8-1 kernel but i think it's not possible with a x86_64 architecture. ( i've got a amd64 3000+ with a via82xx chipset) Is it wrong ? because i can't see any options for the APM on the kernels .config and on make menuconfig. It's just to
