Using debian x86_64 2.6.8-9-amd64-k8, I think I see the same problem
that greg reported in

It gets stranger, though:
1. The same memory stick reads and writes fine on my x86 sarge
laptop.

Ubuntu (amd64) automatically detects and mounts a USB stick, and even
puts it on the desktop for you. This feature highly impressed me,
good evidence for linux being as easy, or easier, than windows.

I try to mount a VFAT USB key on my Debian/pure64 distro without any success:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
or too many mounted file systems
I can mount the key on a ix86 32 bit system.
