FTR, php5 changing to libmysqlclient_r happened on 2008-05-11, but the
original bug report was on 2008-05-08. There cannot be a connection.

It looks like a mysql or php problem. It could be related to the
change to libmysqlclient_r in php, but I think a problem with the
beta mysql is more likely.
