Hi.
I have same problem, after a daily upgrade of my system, apache stopped serve php-pages. I tested to remove httpd.conf and run dpkg-reconfigure apache. And followed the README instructions in /usr/share/doc/.. for "apache" and "php4", but without any luck. I have done alot of mixuring by myown ( installed and removed lot of package) without any luck.

What I remember from the beginning where that "apache restart" complained that libphp4.so module was gone. A file that according to "apt-file search libphp", are served by:
php4: usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so
BUT my version of install of these package "php4", does NOT contain this file. According to "dpkg -L php4", it look like a dummy package:
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/lintian
/usr/share/lintian/overrides
/usr/share/lintian/overrides/php4

THERE ARE ONE PHP THING THAT STILL WORK,
"phpmyadmin"(that handle mySql-database), still works.
But this one have symlinks here and there, and own configfile.. so I can't follow why it still works.

This is my installs of apache:
apache (1.3.31-4) Versatile, high-performance HTTP server
apache-common (1.3.31-4) Support files for all Apache webservers
apache-utils (1.3.31-4) Utility programs for webservers

And this is my installs of php's
php4 (4.3.8-9) server-side, HTML-embedded scripting language (m
php4-cgi (4.3.8-9) server-side, HTML-embedded scripting language (C
php4-cli 4.3.8-9 command-line interpreter for the php4 scripting
php4-common (4.3.8-9) Common files for packages built from the php4 so
php4-gd2 (4.3.2+rc3-2) GD module (with GD2) for php4
php4-mysql (4.3.8-9) MySQL module for php4
php4-pear (4.3.8-9) PEAR - PHP Extension and Application Repository

Any ideer are welcome!
