Problem 1: When I visit http://localhost/doc/apache2-doc/ (which is the contents of /usr/share/doc/apache2-doc/) and select the manual directory there, I get the following page: URI: index.html.de Content-Language: de Content-type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 URI: index.html.en Content-Language: en Content-type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 URI: index.html.ja.jis Content-Language: ja Content-type: text/html; charset=ISO-2022-JP URI: index.html.ko.euc-kr Content-Language: ko Content-type: text/html; charset=EUC-KR URI: index.html.ru.koi8-r Content-Language: ru Content-type: text/html; charset=KOI8-R This does not look like the manual. The problem is, that the contents of the /usr/share/doc/apache2-doc/manual/index.html file are not valid HTML. Problem 2: I try to visit the URL http://localhost/doc/apache2-doc/manual/index.html.en instead. This seems to work at first, but clicking on the de link (top right corner, after available languages) gives the following error message: The requested URL /doc/apache2-doc/manual/de/ was not found on this server. Probably the link was meant to point to the index.html.de file, instead. Problem 3: Returning to the http://localhost/doc/apache2-doc/manual/index.html.en page I notice that almost none of the links there works. For example the New features with Apache 2.0 link points to a page containing URI: new_features_2_0.html.de Content-Language: de Content-type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 URI: new_features_2_0.html.en Content-Language: en Content-type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 URI: new_features_2_0.html.fr Content-Language: fr Content-type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 URI: new_features_2_0.html.ja.jis Content-Language: ja Content-type: text/html; charset=ISO-2022-JP URI: new_features_2_0.html.ko.euc-kr Content-Language: ko Content-type: text/html; charset=EUC-KR URI: new_features_2_0.html.ru.koi8-r Content-Language: ru Content-type: text/html; charset=KOI8-R This is a similar problem as problem 1 above. This is bad, as in the install dialogs it is not clear from context that the user is asked questions for his https config. Besides it is superfluous, as the created apache.pem file is not referenced in the supplied config files. In my case it is even annoying, as I already have my own working certificate, and the apache.pem file is placed in the middle of my certificate directories. I therefore recommend removing the dependency on ssl-cert. As a suggested package it is IMHO better referenced. Apache2-common does not depen on any woker module. As it hardly usable without one, it would be great to have an or'd depency on apache2-mpm-prefork|apache2-mpm-threadpool|apache2-mpm-worker|apache2-mpm-perchild (or any mpm modules that are to come) with the version of the mpms being the same as apache2-common. As they are derived from the same source, it is easy to extend the build script this way. --- Received: (at 234955-close) by bugs.debian.org; 7 Jul 2004 09:49:41 + From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Jul 07 02:49:41 2004 Return-path: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Received: from newraff.debian.org [208.185.25.31] (mail) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1Bi93d-00057h-00; Wed, 07 Jul 2004 02:49:41 -0700 Received: from dsilvers by newraff.debian.org with local (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1Bi8vr-0001YW-00; Wed, 07 Jul 2004 05:41:39 -0400 From: Thom May [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Katie: lisa $Revision: 1.30 $ Subject: Bug#234955: fixed in apache2 2.0.50-1 Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sender: Daniel Silverstone [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 07 Jul 2004 05:41:39 -0400 Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-6.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00,HAS_BUG_NUMBER autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 X-Spam-Level: X-CrossAssassin-Score: 6 Source: apache2 Source-Version: 2.0.50-1 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of apache2, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: apache2-common_2.0.50-1_sparc.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-common_2.0.50-1_sparc.deb apache2-doc_2.0.50-1_all.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-doc_2.0.50-1_all.deb apache2-mpm-perchild_2.0.50-1_sparc.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-mpm-perchild_2.0.50-1_sparc.deb apache2-mpm-prefork_2.0.50-1_sparc.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-mpm-prefork_2.0.50-1_sparc.deb apache2-mpm-threadpool_2.0.50-1_sparc.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-mpm-threadpool_2.0.50-1_sparc.deb

I'm finding myself running into a problem a lot, and it's a bit of a pain. I edit a file in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/, and keep it open to test a change with apachectl configtest (for easy undoing). However, I get the following: [ [EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~/ ]$ sudo apachectl configtest Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/.people.circainformation.com.swp: Invalid command 'b0VIM', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration [ [EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~/ ]$ Rather a bit irritating, that's Vim's swapfile. There might be Emacs files scattered about, as well. That being said, I think including .* (shell glob, not regexp) is probably not a great idea - prefixing files with a single period is a common way to stop things from looking at them automagically. As such, I'd suggest 'Include /etc/apache2/sites-enabled' be changed to 'Include /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/[^.]*', perhaps 'Include /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/[^.#]*'. I use the former, works great. It seems to me that this example ssl.conf should be installed by default. If the intention is not to fully enable ssl by default, then perhaps an apache2-ssl package could be created to handle ssl. As for the parts of the sample ssl.conf which need to be changed, the only critical change is to specify the correct file for SSLCertificateFile. This should, by default, point to the certificate file created by apache2-ssl-certificate. The only other potential changes are DocumentRoot, ServerName ServerAdmin, ErrorLog, and TransferLog. All of these could be commented out in ssl.conf, as they have probably been set elsewhere. The problem is that the userdir module has nothing to .load and so only has a .conf file. a2enmod, only looks for .load files, and so cannot find userdir. There are two possible solutions to this problem: 1. Create a, possibly empty, userdir.load, which a2enmod can find, or 2. Modify a2enmod and a2dismod to look for either .conf or .load files. Personally I advocate the first solution, as it keeps things much simpler. Bug#258145: postinst: lossage with a2enmod userdir
Package: apache2-common Version: 2.0.50-1 Severity: important apache2-common.postinst contains an unconditional call to a2enmod userdir , which is prone to failure for various reasons. The main problem is that it is not idempotent, as a2enmod exits with status 1 if the module is already enabled; please either fix it to exit 0 in that case or run a2enmod only if /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/userdir.load doesn't already exist. (The call should probably also be conditional on upgrading from versions prior to 2.0.50-1, for the sake of weird administrators who don't actually want to enable the module.) In addition, a2enmod failed the first time around because I'd already symlinked userdir.conf over; perhaps it should run ln -sf rather than just ln -s. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.4.26 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US Versions of packages apache2-common depends on: ii debconf 1.4.29 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.8.3Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii libapr0 2.0.50-1 The Apache Portable Runtime ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libdb4.24.2.52-16Berkeley v4.2 Database Libraries [ ii libexpat1 1.95.6-8 XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libldap22.1.30-1 OpenLDAP libraries ii libmagic1 4.09-1 File type determination library us ii libssl0.9.7 0.9.7d-3 SSL shared libraries ii mime-support3.26-1 MIME files 'mime.types' 'mailcap ii net-tools 1.60-10 The NET-3 networking toolkit ii openssl 0.9.7d-3 Secure Socket Layer (SSL) binary a ii ssl-cert1.0-8Simple debconf wrapper for openssl ii zlib1g 1:1.2.1.1-3 compression library - runtime -- no debconf information
