Well, while working on the efika support, i found out that more problematic

Right, looks like that is indeed the crucial point: the questions are
asked with the graphical installer and not with the regular one. This

The problem does seem to be that NetworkManager doesn't know what to
do with the bmac interface, because it doesn't have carrier detect,

the sound card doesn't seem to be detected/supported. previously it was
a cs46xx audio card which afaicr worked fine before installation, though
it's possible i had placed some extra modprobe options long ago and
forgotten about

in etch are also sometimes not working and older hardware might not be
