everything worked just fine. To check whether this error still occurs, I
installed debootstrap_0.1.15.7_i386.deb (and wget + gcc) in this chroot
and tried it (on a "broken" box) from there. Everything worked fine, even
without --arch.

Using grub instead of lilo is something the i386 people would have to
decide. But I don't know if anybody has made the effort to create
something similar to liloconfig for grub yet.

package that you can use to reduce size aiming at b-f.
