Comments/Problems:
It seems LVM is still thouroughly broken - impossible to install base system on LVM from sarge-netinstall-beta4.iso and up to 2004-05-04 iso image. Both 2.4.25 and 2.6.3 kernels fail to install.
Disk is formatted as follows: /boot primary 64 Mb, then LVM physical volume of 160 Gb with one volume group vghda1 and logical volumes lvroot, lvusr, lvusrlocal, lvtmp, lvvar, lvhome, lvopt with corresponding file systems. I have tried both ext3 and xfs and both fail on kernel install.
Transcripts of the error screens:
----------------------------------------
[!!] Install the base system Unable to install the selected kernel An error was returned while trying to install the kernel into the target system.
Kernel package: 'kernel-image-2.4.25-1-386'.
Check /var/log/messages or see virtual console 3 for the details.

----------------------------------------
[!!] Install the base system Installation step failed An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Install the base system
<Continue>
---------------------------------------- Error log from console 3:
Setting up kernel-image-2.6.3-1-386 (2.6.3-2) ... /usr/sbin/mkinitrd: constituent device /dev/vghda1/lvroot does not exist Failed to create inird image. dpkg: error processing kernel-iamge-2.6.3-1-386 (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 9 Errors were encountered while processing: kernel-image-2.6.3-1-386 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
These errors are reproductible on a Hush (P4 2.8 GHz, 1 Gb RAM, 160 ATA IDE HD) and on an older Dell (P3 300 MHz, 256 Mb RAM, 18 Gb SCSI HD). The only solution found so far is partitioning the disk the old way, no LVM.
