I solved the soundcard problem, and wanted to report my experience just to set the record straight and maybe help others who have the same problem. Nothing here should be considered a real bug.
The soundcard works after I did two things. BTW, I do not have an actual soundcard, I am using the built-in sound on the motherboard. The first thing was to install the standard 2.6 kernel (kernel-image-2.6-686) under Debian so that I get new kernel upgrades. The second is to turn up the volume of the output signal of the built-in card so I could hear it. The speakers I have are pretty bad, they don't even have an independent volume control (they would probably be called junk even 10 years ago). This is a troubleshooting 101 lesson. I did originally think that my speakers were a possiblity, but I also thought that the system would show under /proc/asound/cards. This may not be the case for built-in soundcards (which this is my first time working with), I may look more at the kernel architecture sometime to see exactly what is going on. Also, I will not be doing any experiments to prove whether the first or second explanation is true. I strongly believe explanation two. This should close the soundcard problem. I was a little curious about the built-in video card and using vesa drivers instead of via. I think that I should have done more homework in motherboard selection. Maybe the board I have is not yet very well supported. After a while, I may be able to put the via drivers in. If you have any thoughts on this let me know, but even if not you can close this report. Thanks for your help, and the installer looks like it works very well. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
