Starting with version 1.96+20090826-1 grub-pc uses the wrong fs type for the root filesystem, so your system won't boot anymore. The solution is to change set FreeBSD.vfs.root.mountfrom=ufs2:/dev/ad0s1a into set FreeBSD.vfs.root.mountfrom=ufs:/dev/ad0s1a (bug report as bug#543950)
